What Do Our Children See?

How's everybody during these waning days of 2025? Well and thriving, I hope.
I am writing this post at a time when my feelings are all over the place. For instance, I feel encouraged by my daughter's good grades in school (she's putting in the work!), but also discouraged by fear-inducing news. I'd rather look at her beautiful brightful and hopeful eyes than the never-ending soul-crushing headlines.
I feel encouraged by the cries for resistance and at the same time discouraged by the continued vitriol on social media. Buuuuut, for some reason, the algorithm sometimes exposes me to posts by people whose thoughts could not be more opposite than mine (and not in a good or mind-challenging way). To insult to injury, I then wander to the comments. Oy! I know that I shouldn't, but curiosity gets the best of me and I read the lies, mis-understandings, name calling and verbal violence. Y'all, we are a whole mess!
How we got to this place in American history can be studied, researched, and discussed. Where we go from here is a question, which social activists, politicians, and other leaders should focus on. However, what has me currently transfixed are these questions: what do our children see today? What do they understand of the current events? What media is reaching them these days? How is it shaping their view of the world? What impact is the world they see having on them?
Recently, in church during its alter call, Amara grabbed my and her Dad's hands and led us to the alter. I leaned over and asked her what she wanted to pray about. She said, "Let's pray for a different President. Someone who won't let people starve." Lord, hear our prayer.
Our children are watching. They are listening. They are feeling. As parents, caregivers, and educators, we have to be more intentional than ever to counter the toxicity.
As someone explained, our current President is not the cause, but the symptom of problems America has-- racism, sexism, greed, to name a few. Kidogo Productions can't solve all of America's problems (nor the problems in the rest of the world), but it certainly provides a safe space for those who seek to see our world and its people from a kinder point of view.
On a brighter note, things are progressing very nicely behind the scenes! We've got a new lookbook, a beautiful backstory to Kidogoville, a detailed go-to-market plan, and a winning capital raising strategy! We will be hitting the 2026 ground running!
Last week, I put out a call for submissions for our Kwanzaa newsletter. Let me kindly remind you here:
